We are lucky enough to live, work, and attend school in a community that values the education of its citizens. Our Royal Oak Library participates in a program known as Reading Is Fundamental (R.I.F.).
The purpose and goal of the program is to encourage all of our students to be readers, to utilize the wonderful library that we have in our community, and to provide each kid with access to books. In Royal Oak we visit the library on three separate visits; each visit focuses on a different aspect of the library and has students practice their skills of navigating the library. The icing on the cake is that each student, on each visit, has the opportunity to pick and keep a new book of their choice. Multiple community organizations donate money to support the purchase of the free books.
This afternoon I sent home a permission slip for our first trip that is scheduled for Tuesday, November 24, 2015 in the afternoon. Please sign and return the permission slip at your earliest convenience. Tomorrow I will send home a small yellow card that is an application for a library card. We ask that all students who do not have an active library card to complete the card and return it to me as soon as possible. I will drop off the applications at the library and on our first visit the students will get their new library cards. All students who have their own cards are encouraged to bring their card to the library as I provide the class time to shop and checkout some books.
Additionally, to defray costs we ask for parent volunteers to drive our students to and from the library. If you are interested and available to drive please complete the form on the back of the permission slip also.
If you are able to drive you have no responsibility to the trip itself other than chauffeur. In past years parents have visited a coffee shop in downtown Royal Oak for a couple of hours, have done some shopping, and even grabbed a late lunch with other parent drivers. Some parents have stayed on the first floor of the library, found a good book and started reading. Still others have sat in their car and taken a nap!
If you cannot drive for this trip know that we will attend two other times throughout the school year.
Finally, I have attached the permission slip and volunteer driving form to this blog...in the event your child can't seem to put their finger on it.
